PFCP
Packet Forwarding Control Protocol
3GPP TS 29.244 protocol operating over N4 enabling SMF to configure packet routing rules into UPF.
Technical Explanation
PFCP operates over UDP port 8805 across the N4 interface. It defines a clean protocol separation between control intelligence and user plane execution. The SMF uses PFCP to instantiate, modify, and delete user plane rules: PDRs, FARs, QERs, and URRs, receiving real-time usage reports in return.
Key Functions
- Standardized CUPS protocol operating over UDP port 8805 across N4
- Programs packet detection, forwarding, QoS, and metering rules into UPF
- Powers hardware and software-accelerated user plane routing pipelines
