FAR

Forwarding Action Rule

PFCP rule instructing the UPF on how to handle matching packets: Forward, Drop, Buffer, or Duplicate.

Technical Explanation

Linked to one or more PDRs, a Forwarding Action Rule (FAR) instructs the UPF what physical action to take: (1) FORW (forward packet with encapsulation/decapsulation to target interface), (2) DROP (discard packet), (3) BUFF (buffer packet and notify SMF for downlink paging), or (4) DUPL (duplicate packet for lawful intercept).

Key Functions

  • Instructs UPF whether to Forward, Drop, Buffer, or Duplicate packets
  • Specifies GTP-U outer header creation and destination interface parameters
  • Buffers downlink packets and triggers Downlink Data Notifications during paging
