Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface / Smart Radio Environment

Metamaterial-based programmable planar surfaces that dynamically manipulate radio waves by altering phase, amplitude, and polarization in real time.

Technical Explanation

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS), also referred to as Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces (IRS), turn the wireless propagation environment from an uncontrollable hindrance into an active partner. An RIS array comprises thousands of sub-wavelength electromagnetic elements controlled by low-power varactors, PIN diodes, or liquid crystals. When a 6G beam hits an RIS, the surface dynamically shifts phase to bounce the beam around obstructions, focus signals onto moving users, eliminate dead zones, and cancel unwanted interference.
