Technical Explanation
While 5G Massive MIMO employed 64 to 256 antenna transceivers operating primarily in the far-field propagation zone, 6G XL-MIMO scales antenna counts into the thousands. Operating with massive aperture arrays, communication occurs predominantly in the radiative near-field (Fresnel) region. This enables beam focusing in distance as well as angle (spherical wavefronts), allowing the base station to serve multiple users located along the exact same angular direction by focusing energy at distinct radial depths.
