STAR-RIS
Simultaneously Transmitting And Reflecting RIS
Advanced metasurfaces capable of simultaneously transmitting signals through the surface and reflecting them backward to provide full 360-degree smart radio coverage.
Technical Explanation
Standard reflective RIS surfaces only serve users located on the same side of the surface as the transmitter (180-degree half-space). STAR-RIS overcomes this fundamental limitation by utilizing sub-wavelength magnetic and electric meta-atoms that support both electric polarization currents and magnetic surface currents. This allows the surface to split incoming energy into transmitted (refracted) waves penetrating through walls and reflected waves directed into the front space, offering full 360-degree spatial coverage.
Key Functions
- Simultaneous 360-degree full-space electromagnetic coverage across indoor and outdoor partitions
- Independent amplitude and phase manipulation for both transmitted and reflected beams
- Energy splitting, mode selection, and time-switching operational modes
- Penetrating building exterior windows while simultaneously serving outdoor pedestrians
- Eliminating blind spots on both sides of architectural walls and partition barriers
