A resilience mechanism that duplicates critical packets across completely disjoint physical routing paths and eliminates duplicate copies at the destination.
Technical Explanation
To guarantee 99.99999% (seven-nines) reliability for industrial robotics and remote surgery, relying on standard packet retransmissions (ARQ) introduces unacceptable delay. The PRE function replicates every critical packet at the ingress node, sending duplicate copies over physically independent fiber and wireless paths. The egress node forwards whichever packet arrives first and cleanly discards the duplicate, achieving instantaneous hitless failover even if an entire fiber line is severed.
