Dual-Functional Radar-Communication Systems
A unified transceiver and waveform architecture that simultaneously performs radar echo detection and high-speed data transmission on the same hardware.
Technical Explanation
Historically, radar systems and telecom systems developed on entirely separate engineering paths: radars used high-power chirps with specialized pulsing, while telecom used complex QAM constellations and OFDM frames. Dual-Functional Radar-Communication Systems (DFRS) synthesize waveforms (such as radar-embedded OTFS and OFDM) where every transmitted symbol carries both high-rate telecom payload bits and deterministic radar ambiguity properties for target detection.
Key Functions
- Single unified RF front-end and digital signal processing chain for radar and telecom
- Transmitting user data bits while simultaneously extracting target range, velocity, and angle
- Eliminating mutual electromagnetic interference between co-located radar and radios
- Halving spectrum licensing costs by sharing a single frequency band for both functions
- Fundamental physical layer enabler for 6G ISAC services across autonomous vehicles and towers
