Split Bearer

Dual Connectivity Split Radio Bearer

Radio bearer whose PDCP layer routes traffic concurrently across both Master Cell Group and Secondary Cell Group.

Technical Explanation

In a Split Bearer, a single PDCP entity (hosted either at the Master Node or Secondary Node) splits outgoing packet streams across two independent lower-layer RLC/MAC protocol stacks on the MCG and SCG radio legs. The receiving PDCP entity recombines the streams in-order, pooling total bandwidth across two distinct base stations.

Key Functions

  • Splits single data stream across two independent radio access nodes
  • Combines throughput of 4G eNodeB and 5G gNodeB (or two 5G nodes)
  • Managed by centralized PDCP entity executing packet reordering and duplication
