Master Node (MN)

Dual Connectivity Master Node

The radio access node in Dual Connectivity maintaining control plane connection to the core network (AMF or MME).

Technical Explanation

In MR-DC, the Master Node controls the overall UE state. In EN-DC (Option 3x), the MN is an LTE eNodeB connected to the EPC; in NE-DC (Option 4), the MN is a 5G gNodeB connected to 5GC; in NGEN-DC (Option 7), the MN is an ng-eNodeB connected to 5GC. The MN coordinates addition, modification, and release of the Secondary Node.

Key Functions

  • Maintains primary control plane connection with the mobile core network
  • Coordinates addition, modification, and release of Secondary Node
  • Hosts Master Cell Group (MCG) and anchors user security context
