SpCell
Special Cell
Collective 3GPP architectural term designating either the PCell of an MCG or the PSCell of an SCG.
Technical Explanation
The 3GPP specifications define 'SpCell' (Special Cell) as any cell that hosts a PUCCH instance and provides dedicated control channel anchoring (i.e. PCell in Master Cell Group or PSCell in Secondary Cell Group). SpCells monitor radio link quality (RLF) and cannot be deactivated via SCell MAC CEs.
Key Functions
- Unified architectural classification for PCell (MCG) and PSCell (SCG)
- Terminates PUCCH control signaling and timing alignment loops
- Monitors out-of-sync/in-sync radio link quality for Radio Link Failure (RLF)
Specifications
3GPP TS 38.300, TS 38.331
