Intelligent Roadway Infrastructure

Smart Lampposts & Embedded Highway Sensors

Transforming physical roads into smart interactive platforms using micro-sensors, Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces, and edge radios embedded in lampposts.

Technical Explanation

6G integrates telecommunications directly into civil transportation infrastructure. Municipal smart lampposts house Sub-THz micro-base stations, edge GPUs, and ISAC radar sensors; road pavement contains embedded strain and moisture sensors. The roadway continuously communicates with passing vehicles, alerting them to black ice, fallen debris, and jaywalking pedestrians hidden around corners in real time.

Key Functions

  • Smart lampposts serving as multi-functional 6G base stations, edge compute hubs, and radars
  • Pavement-embedded sensors monitoring road surface ice, asphalt wear, and tire friction
  • Autonomous infrastructure-to-vehicle (I2V) safety warnings for hidden road hazards
  • Dynamic smart street lighting that illuminates only when approaching vehicles are detected
  • Serving as urban mounting platforms for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS)
Specifications
ISO 22737 (Intelligent Transport Systems), ETSI ITS Standards, 3GPP Rel-19 V2X
