Using optical frequency combs to generate ultra-pure, phase-stable terahertz carrier waves by beating two coherent laser lines in a photomixer.
Technical Explanation
Generating clean carrier frequencies above 100 GHz using electronic frequency multipliers is plagued by thermal phase noise and low output power. Optical Frequency Combs produce a series of discrete, equidistant, phase-locked laser frequencies. By beating two comb lines together on an ultrafast uni-traveling-carrier photodiode (UTC-PD), transceivers generate pristine Sub-THz and THz waves with phase noise orders of magnitude lower than electronic oscillators.
