Microscopic, highly optimized User Plane Function compiled into hardware SmartNICs or cell tower baseband SoCs to eliminate core traversal.

Technical Explanation

In 5G, user traffic must traverse centralized or regional UPFs, adding milliseconds of propagation delay. The Micro-UPF Edge Shard compiles essential packet routing, charging, and QoS enforcement into a memory footprint of just a few megabytes. Embedded directly into base station FPGA SmartNICs or edge server DPUs (Data Processing Units), it breaks local traffic out directly at the cell tower antenna, delivering true zero-core sub-millisecond round-trips.
