In-situ OAM (IOAM)
Per-Packet Real-Time In-situ Telemetry
Embedding operational telemetry data (microsecond timestamps, node IDs, buffer queue depths) directly into live user packets as they traverse the 6G network.
Technical Explanation
Traditional network monitoring uses synthetic ping probes that only provide coarse, out-of-band estimates of network health. In-situ OAM (IOAM) inserts telemetry metadata directly into live user packet headers. As packets traverse routers and core functions, each node stamps its internal queue depth, instantaneous processing latency, and packet drop counters, providing the Digital Twin Network with an exact, per-packet x-ray of network health.
Key Functions
- Zero-overhead insertion of real-time performance telemetry directly into live packets
- Capturing exact per-hop queuing delay, link utilization, and buffer depth in microseconds
- Detecting micro-burst congestion events that synthetic ping probes completely miss
- Streaming telemetry export to NWDAF and Digital Twin engines at wire speed
- Cryptographic integrity stamping preventing malicious packet telemetry falsification
