Technical Explanation

Traditional IP multicast (PIM) requires routers to maintain complex state trees for every multicast group, causing router memory exhaustion when thousands of live streams operate simultaneously. BIER encodes the list of intended destination routers as a compact bitmask in the packet header. Intermediate routers simply inspect the bitmask and replicate packets to corresponding ports without maintaining any multicast flow state, enabling effortless broadcast of 8K holographic stadium events.
