P4 Data Plane
P4-Programmable Ultra-Fast Line-Rate User Plane
Forwarding planes programmed using the P4 language that process, inspect, and manipulate packets directly in hardware switches at line rate.
Technical Explanation
In traditional architectures, packet processing is restricted to fixed ASIC chip functions (like standard IP forwarding). The 6G P4 Data Plane allows operators to push new protocol headers, telemetry probes, and in-network compute functions directly into hardware switching pipelines. Using P4, switches perform in-band telemetry (INT), deep packet inspection, and packet duplication/elimination in nanoseconds without CPU interrupts.
Key Functions
- Software-defined packet parsing and forwarding behavior programmed via the P4 language
- Line-rate In-band Network Telemetry (INT) stamping microsecond timestamps on every packet
- Hardware-accelerated traffic classification, firewalling, and DDoS mitigation
- Rapid protocol evolution deploying new 6G encapsulation headers without silicon respins
- Sub-microsecond packet replication for zero-loss deterministic networking (DetNet)
