E2-6G Interface
Next-Gen Open RAN E2 Control & Telemetry Interface
The standardized open interface connecting the Near-RT RIC to underlying central units (O-CU) and distributed units (O-DU) with 6G extensions.
Technical Explanation
The E2 interface is the nervous system of Open RAN. In 6G, E2-6G is upgraded with enhanced Service Models (E2SM) to stream radar sensing data, Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) phase state matrices, Sub-THz beam tracking vectors, and near-field spatial channel coordinates between the radio nodes and AI-driven xApps at microsecond latencies.
Key Functions
- Streaming high-frequency radio telemetry (E2SM-KPM) to intelligence controllers
- Delivering real-time control actions (E2SM-RC) to base station schedulers
- Standardized extensions for ISAC radar point-cloud telemetry streaming
- Control primitives for external Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface arrays
- Multi-vendor interoperability linking third-party RICs with diverse radio hardware
