PDU Session Ethernet
Ethernet PDU Session Type
Native Layer 2 Ethernet PDU session designed for industrial LANs and Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN).
Technical Explanation
Introduced in 5G, Ethernet PDU Sessions transport raw Layer 2 Ethernet frames without IP encapsulation overhead. The UPF acts as a virtual Ethernet bridge, learning MAC addresses and forwarding IEEE 802.1Q tagged frames for factory automation and smart grid industrial controls.
Key Functions
- Transports raw Layer 2 Ethernet frames over 5G without IP encapsulation
- UPF functions as virtual Ethernet switch learning client MAC addresses
- Foundational transport for Industrial IoT, factory robots, and TSN
Specifications
3GPP TS 23.501, TS 23.502
