5G Time-Sensitive Networking Integration
The 3GPP integration of IEEE 802.1 TSN deterministic Ethernet standards over 5G for industrial automation and robotics.
Technical Explanation
Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) defines deterministic Ethernet for industrial manufacturing where packet jitter must be under a microsecond. 3GPP Release 16 and 17 bridge 5G with IEEE TSN by treating the entire 5G system (UE, gNodeB, UPF) as a virtual TSN bridge. It synchronizes time via IEEE 802.1AS (gPTP), integrates with TSN Centralized Network Controllers (CNC), and enforces strict bounded latency and microsecond-level time synchronization across the wireless link.
Key Functions
- Microsecond-level precision time synchronization (IEEE 802.1AS / gPTP)
- Deterministic bounded latency and zero packet loss for industrial automation
- Integration as a virtual TSN Bridge with standard IEEE CNC controllers
- Support for Industrial Ethernet frame transmission over 5G PDU Sessions
