VoNR
Voice over New Radio
Native voice and video calling running entirely over 5G Standalone (SA) radio and 5G Core without falling back to 4G LTE.
Technical Explanation
Voice over New Radio (VoNR, also known as Vo5G) is the 5G SA equivalent of VoLTE. Voice packets are encapsulated over 5G NR radio bearers with 5QI=1 (conversational voice) and processed by an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) connected to the 5G UPF. VoNR delivers ultra-fast call setup times (<1.5s), superior EVS (Enhanced Voice Services) HD audio quality, and prevents the device from dropping down to 4G during active voice calls (unlike EPS Fallback), preserving high-speed 5G data sessions during phone calls.
Key Functions
- Pure 5G Standalone voice and conversational video services
- Sub-second call setup and high-definition EVS codec transmission
- Zero interruption to 5G ultra-high-speed data downloads during calls
- SIP/IMS control signaling over dedicated 5QI=5 bearer
Specifications
3GPP TS 23.501, TS 23.502, GSMA NG.114
Interfaces
Uu (5QI=1)N3N6 (to IMS)Gm, Rx/N5
