PSS

Primary Synchronization Signal

First physical layer signal detected during 5G cell search, providing subframe timing and cell ID factor N_ID_2 (0, 1, or 2).

Technical Explanation

The PSS is an m-sequence of length 127 mapped onto 127 active subcarriers within symbol 0 of the SS/PBCH block (SSB). It defines physical cell identity factor N_ID_2 in {0, 1, 2}. Detecting PSS enables the UE to obtain slot boundary timing, coarse frequency offset estimation, and initial radio frame synchronization.

Key Functions

  • Provides coarse symbol and subframe timing synchronization
  • Identifies physical cell ID factor N_ID_2 (0, 1, or 2)
  • Enables initial frequency offset estimation during cell search
