Paging Occasion (PO)

Paging Occasion Monitoring Slot

Specific subframe or slot within a Paging Frame where a UE in idle/inactive monitors PDCCH for P-RNTI.

Technical Explanation

To conserve battery, a UE wakes up only on its designated Paging Occasion (PO) within its Paging Frame (PF). The PO timing is calculated via a standardized formula from the UE's 5G-S-TMSI mod N. The UE decodes DCI scrambled with P-RNTI; if its identity is included in the PDSCH paging record, it initiates connection setup.

Key Functions

  • Calculated deterministically from UE identity 5G-S-TMSI
  • Limits PDCCH monitoring strictly to scheduled milliseconds per DRX cycle
  • Enables incoming voice calls and push notifications with minimal standby battery use
