PEI
Permanent Equipment Identifier
Permanent hardware identity of the user terminal (equivalent to 15-digit IMEI or 16-digit IMEISV).
Technical Explanation
The PEI uniquely identifies the physical mobile device hardware. When commanded by the AMF, the UE reports its PEI over encrypted NAS signaling. The AMF queries the 5G Equipment Identity Register (5G-EIR) to verify that the terminal is not reported stolen, counterfeit, or blocked.
Key Functions
- Permanent hardware identifier of the cellular device (IMEI/IMEISV)
- Reported to AMF over ciphered NAS signaling during registration
- Validated against 5G-EIR database to block stolen or rogue equipment
