mMTC
Massive Machine Type Communication
The 5G usage scenario dedicated to connecting massive numbers of low-cost, low-power IoT devices with high density and extended battery life.
Technical Explanation
mMTC is designed to support up to 1 million connected devices per square kilometer (10x higher density than 4G). The devices typically transmit small, infrequent bursts of data, demand ultra-low power consumption (enabling 10-15 year battery life on standard cells), and require deep indoor and underground coverage. 5G fulfills mMTC through optimized evolution of NB-IoT (Narrowband IoT) and LTE-M within the 5G framework, alongside RedCap (Reduced Capability) for intermediate IoT tiers.
Key Functions
- Support for 1,000,000 devices/km² connection density
- Extended Discontinuous Reception (eDRX) and Power Saving Mode (PSM) for 10+ year battery life
- Coverage enhancement techniques (+20 dB link budget for deep penetration)
- Low complexity radio hardware with small bandwidth footprints
