Conditional Handover (CHO)
3GPP Rel-16 Conditional Handover
Handover mechanism where execution conditions are pre-configured, allowing UE to trigger handover autonomously.
Technical Explanation
In standard handover, command transmission across a rapidly fading source link frequently fails at cell boundaries. In Rel-16 Conditional Handover (CHO), the source gNodeB pre-prepares one or multiple candidate target cells and sends execution conditions (e.g. Event A3 offset) while the link is still healthy. When a target satisfies the condition, the UE executes handover immediately without waiting for a real-time command.
Key Functions
- Pre-configures candidate target cells and execution criteria in advance
- Eliminates handover failures caused by late command delivery in deep fading
- Slashes handover failure rate by over 90% in high-speed and mmWave mobility
