Ultra-Wideband Optical Microwave Photonic Mixer for Sub-THz

Optoelectronic receiver using laser light and optical modulators to convert 100-300 GHz radio signals directly into baseband with zero electronic mixer distortion.

Technical Explanation

At frequencies exceeding 150 GHz, electronic mixers introduce severe conversion loss, thermal noise, and local oscillator leakage. The Direct RF-Photonic Downconverter utilizes microwave photonics. The incoming sub-THz radio signal modulates an optical laser carrier via a high-speed Mach-Zehnder electro-optic modulator. Optical heterodyning downconverts the signal instantaneously across tens of gigahertz of instantaneous bandwidth with ultra-flat frequency response and negligible distortion.
