RTCP

RTP Control Protocol

Companion protocol to RTP providing out-of-band monitoring of media transmission statistics and QoS.

Technical Explanation

Operating alongside RTP, RTCP periodically transmits control packets (Sender Reports and Receiver Reports) between call endpoints. It monitors packet loss fraction, round-trip transit delay, and inter-arrival jitter, enabling adaptive rate control in variable radio conditions.

Key Functions

  • Monitors real-time voice stream quality and packet loss statistics
  • Reports transmission jitter, round-trip delay, and receiver feedback
  • Enables adaptive multirate codec rate switching during channel degradation
Specifications
IETF RFC 3550, 3GPP TS 26.114
Interfaces
