XR-Aware Scheduling

Application-Aware Extended Reality Radio Scheduling

gNodeB radio scheduling architecture that detects video frame boundaries and burst characteristics, prioritizing critical packets to eliminate VR motion sickness.

Technical Explanation

Extended Reality (XR) video streams generate bursty traffic where thousands of packets belong to a single video frame that must arrive before the display refresh deadline. Rel-18 XR-Aware Scheduling inspects application-layer packet metadata, prioritizing all packets of an active frame to ensure the entire frame is decoded before the strict display refresh cutoff.

Key Functions

  • Detects application-layer video frame boundaries directly in the gNodeB scheduler
  • Allocates radio resources dynamically to accommodate periodic multi-megabit frame bursts
  • Eliminates partial frame drops that ruin video decode and trigger VR motion sickness
  • Maintains 60/90/120 fps continuous video rendering over cellular radio links

3GPP TR 38.835, TS 38.300 (Rel-18)
