eRedCap Half-Duplex FDD

Half-Duplex Frequency Division Duplexing for eRedCap

Operates on paired FDD spectrum without transmitting and receiving at the same time, eliminating expensive high-performance duplexer filters.

Technical Explanation

Full-duplex FDD requires heavy, expensive duplexer filters to isolate simultaneous transmission and reception on paired frequency bands. Rel-18 eRedCap mandates Half-Duplex FDD (HD-FDD) Type A/B, where the terminal switches between transmit and receive modes over time, allowing cheap RF switches to replace bulky ceramic duplexers.

Key Functions

  • Eliminates expensive, bulky ceramic duplexer filters from device RF front-ends
  • Switches dynamically between transmit and receive time slots in paired FDD bands
  • Lowers module hardware costs and shrinks physical enclosure dimensions
  • Enables global deployment across fragmented international paired spectrum bands
