Polar Codes

3GPP Polar Coding

Information-theoretic channel coding scheme selected for 5G control channels (PDCCH, PUCCH, PBCH).

Technical Explanation

Invented by Erdal Arikan, Polar codes are the first provably capacity-achieving codes with low complexity. 3GPP adopted CRC-Aided Successive Cancellation List (CA-SCL) decoding of Polar codes for all physical control channels, delivering outstanding block error rate performance for small to medium payload sizes (tens to hundreds of bits).

Key Functions

  • Guarantees capacity-achieving performance for short and medium control packets
  • Selected exclusively for PDCCH, PUCCH Format 2/3/4, and PBCH
  • Decoded using CRC-Aided Successive Cancellation List (CA-SCL) algorithms
