Extended Reality (XR)

5G XR / Cloud Gaming Optimizations

3GPP Rel-18 features optimizing radio scheduling for Augmented, Virtual, and Mixed Reality video streams.

Technical Explanation

Extended Reality (XR) traffic features quasi-periodic, large video frame bursts with strict latency bounds (<10 ms). Rel-18 introduces XR-aware scheduling: the gNodeB detects video frame boundaries (PDB per frame), synchronizes uplink and downlink streams, and dynamically prioritizes I-frames over P-frames.

Key Functions

  • Optimizes 5G radio scheduling for AR/VR headsets and cloud gaming
  • Synchronizes multi-modal video and haptic streams within 10 ms delay budgets
  • Prioritizes critical video I-frames to prevent visual stuttering and motion sickness
