Even-Harmonic Frequency Downconverter for Sub-THz Mobile Devices
RF silicon circuit allowing mobile phones to downconvert 140 GHz signals using a local oscillator running at half the frequency (70 GHz).
Technical Explanation
Generating high-frequency local oscillator (LO) signals at 140 GHz or 220 GHz inside a smartphone consumes excessive power and causes severe dielectric loss. Sub-Harmonic RF Mixers utilize antiparallel Schottky diode pairs or cross-coupled transistors. The mixer pumps the LO at half or a quarter of the RF frequency (e.g. 70 GHz for a 140 GHz carrier), mixing with the 2nd harmonic to achieve clean frequency downconversion with low DC power draw.
