Ultra-Distributed Micro-User Plane Function
A lightweight, ephemeral user plane function running on embedded roadside units, satellites, and edge nodes to provide sub-millisecond local traffic breakout.
Technical Explanation
While 5G UPF instances were generally deployed in regional data centers or dedicated enterprise server closets, 6G introduces Micro-UPF: ultra-lightweight, stateless forwarding instances implemented with eBPF/XDP and WebAssembly that can be spun up in milliseconds on low-power devices. Micro-UPFs run on LEO satellites, smart lampposts, autonomous vehicle onboard units, and cellular base stations to terminate local data sessions with negligible latency overhead.
