Technical Explanation
In legacy cellular networks, a device must send a preamble, wait for a Random Access Response (RAR), negotiate a scheduling grant, and establish an RRC connection before transmitting a single data packet. For 6G Massive IoT (targeting 10 million devices per square kilometer), this handshake overhead would saturate the control plane. Massive Access Protocols enable grant-free transmission: devices transmit their payload and signature directly on shared resources, where base stations separate them using advanced multi-user detection.
