Protocol enabling smartphones to send control commands to nearby smart metasurface walls to bend and focus radio beams around obstacles.
Technical Explanation
In indoor 6G deployments, sub-THz signals are easily blocked by human bodies, doors, and furniture. STAR-RIS surfaces installed on walls can both reflect and transmit signals simultaneously to cover both sides of a partition. The Handset STAR-RIS Interaction Protocol allows a mobile device encountering signal blockage to send lightweight control packets over low-frequency or Bluetooth LE side-channels, reconfiguring the metasurface phase shifts to illuminate its non-line-of-sight location instantly.
