6G Centimeter Positioning Target
Sub-Centimeter Indoor and Sub-Decimeter Outdoor Localization Metric
IMT-2030 capability requiring native 3D spatial location accuracy below 1 centimeter indoors and below 10 centimeters outdoors.
Technical Explanation
Positioning in 6G is transformed from an auxiliary best-effort service into a native high-precision capability. By leveraging multi-gigahertz signal bandwidths, massive antenna arrays capable of ultra-narrow angular resolution, and phase-level carrier tracking, 6G base stations localize passive and active devices to under 1 centimeter. This replaces separate UWB positioning systems in factories, hospital asset management, and robotic warehouse guidance.
Key Functions
- Achieves native <1 cm 3D positioning accuracy indoors without GPS/GNSS
- Delivers <10 cm outdoor localization accuracy across urban canyons
- Resolves user spatial orientation (6-DoF heading and tilt) with micro-radian precision
- Guarantees spatial anchors for augmented reality and autonomous robots
Specifications
ITU-R M.2160 Capability 8, 3GPP Rel-19 High Accuracy Positioning
Interfaces
