RNA
RAN Notification Area
Configured geographic cluster of cells where a UE in RRC_INACTIVE can move freely without notifying the network.
Technical Explanation
To avoid excessive signaling during mobility, the gNodeB assigns an RNA to the UE in RRC_INACTIVE. The RNA can be defined as a list of individual cells, a single RAN Area ID, or a list of Tracking Area Codes (TACs). As long as the UE moves within its RNA, no signaling is generated.
Key Functions
- Defines boundary within which inactive UEs move without signaling
- Can be configured as cell list, RAN Area ID (RAI), or Tracking Area Codes
- Paging for inactive UEs is scoped across all cells belonging to the RNA
