RLC AM

Radio Link Control Acknowledged Mode

Reliable RLC mode providing guaranteed data delivery via Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) retransmissions.

Technical Explanation

Acknowledged Mode (AM) is the workhorse RLC protocol for error-free data transfer. It adds 12-bit or 18-bit sequence numbers, supports segmentation, reassembly, and re-segmentation, and executes selective-repeat ARQ. When packets are lost on the radio link, RLC AM retransmits missing segments without involving higher layers.

Key Functions

  • Guarantees reliable, lossless data delivery over the radio interface
  • Executes selective-repeat ARQ retransmission of missing segments
  • Supports RLC PDU re-segmentation to fit dynamic MAC transport block grants
