Automated Vehicle Platooning

High-Density Cooperative Truck Platooning over 5G-Advanced

Cooperative driving protocol allowing a convoy of commercial trucks to travel inches apart at highway speeds, slinging aerodynamic drag and fuel use.

Technical Explanation

Commercial freight trucks save up to 20% in fuel by drafting closely behind lead vehicles, but human reaction times cannot prevent rear-end collisions at 1-meter gaps. Rel-18 Platooning uses 5G Sidelink to share acceleration, braking, and steering telemetry instantaneously (sub-2 ms), allowing trailing trucks to brake automatically in lockstep with the lead truck.

Key Functions

  • Synchronizes acceleration and braking across truck convoys with sub-2 ms latency
  • Allows commercial freight trucks to draft safely at high speeds with 1-meter gap spacing
  • Reduces commercial highway freight fuel consumption and carbon emissions by up to 20%
  • Implements automated fail-safe separation protocols if radio packet delivery degrades
