Safety-Critical Positioning Integrity and Protection Levels

Safety-critical framework that calculates statistical Protection Levels (PL) and generates instant alerts if positioning errors exceed Alert Limits.

Technical Explanation

In autonomous driving and drone logistics, an undetected positioning error can cause fatal accidents. Rel-18 introduces Positioning Integrity borrowed from aviation standards: the network computes an authoritative Protection Level (e.g. 99.99999% confidence the vehicle is within 30 cm) and alerts the vehicle within 1 second if signal degradation invalidates the fix.

  • Calculates statistical Protection Levels (PL) bounding maximum possible positioning error
  • Transmits immediate safety alert notifications if positioning accuracy exceeds Alert Limits
  • Satisfies stringent functional safety (ISO 26262 ASIL-D) for autonomous vehicles
