Satellites carrying on-board gNodeB baseband processors that decode and route packets in orbit, halving round-trip latency compared to bent-pipe relays.
Technical Explanation
In legacy transparent 'bent-pipe' satellites, every packet must travel up to the satellite and back down to a ground gateway before reaching the destination, doubling the propagation path. Regenerative satellites host full or split gNodeB (DU/CU) software in orbit, decoding packets, executing local switching, and routing directly across inter-satellite laser links.
