NR-NTN Phase 2
3GPP Release 18 Non-Terrestrial Networks Evolution
Advanced 3GPP satellite framework standardizing regenerative payloads, 10 MHz satellite channels, VSAT mobility, and direct smartphone-to-satellite messaging.
Technical Explanation
While Release 17 introduced basic transparent (bent-pipe) satellite access, Release 18 standardizes NR-NTN Phase 2. It introduces regenerative satellite payloads where gNodeB software runs in orbit, optimizes spectrum for 10 MHz satellite channels, enables high-speed maritime and aviation VSAT mobility, and expands coverage to unmodified consumer handsets.
Key Functions
- Standardizes regenerative satellite payloads hosting onboard gNodeB baseband processing
- Optimizes physical layer channels for narrow 10 MHz satellite spectrum allocations
- Delivers high-throughput mobile satellite connectivity to commercial airliners and ships
- Enables emergency SOS and messaging directly to standard consumer smartphones
Specifications
3GPP TS 38.300, TR 38.821 (Rel-18)
Interfaces
