SSB Transmission Muting

Adaptive Synchronization Signal Block Duty Cycling

Reduces the transmission frequency of Synchronization Signal Blocks (SSB) during empty cells, eliminating permanent radio broadcast overhead.

Technical Explanation

In traditional 5G networks, base stations transmit Synchronization Signal Blocks (SSBs) every 20 milliseconds 24/7, even when no users are within miles. Rel-18 SSB Muting allows empty cell sites to expand SSB periodicity to 80 or 160 ms or mute non-essential SSB beams entirely, waking full broadcast periodicity only upon detecting terminal access preambles.
