Multi-Panel UE (MPUE)

Rel-18 Simultaneous Multi-Panel Transmission & Reception

Allows smartphones with multiple mmWave antenna panels distributed around the chassis to transmit and receive across panels simultaneously.

Technical Explanation

High-frequency mmWave handsets mount separate antenna panels on the top, left, and right sides of the chassis to prevent user hands from blocking all signals. Rel-18 Multi-Panel UE (MPUE Category 2/3) enables simultaneous multi-panel reception and transmission, allowing the phone to communicate with two base stations simultaneously in different spatial directions.

Key Functions

  • Coordinates multiple physical antenna arrays distributed across a mobile handset chassis
  • Enables simultaneous multi-panel uplink transmission (MP-PUSCH) in FR2 bands
  • Bypasses physical human hand blockage by maintaining active links on opposite panels
  • Enhances uplink throughput and reliability in demanding outdoor mmWave deployments
