Fast DCI Beam Indication
L1 DCI-Based Sub-Millisecond Beam Indication
Directly indicates new active beam states via downlink control information (DCI), cutting beam switching latency from tens of milliseconds to sub-millisecond intervals.
Technical Explanation
Prior to Rel-18, activating a new beam TCI state required a slow two-step process: RRC candidate configuration followed by MAC CE activation, causing 20-50 ms delays. Fast DCI Beam Indication allows the gNodeB to switch the active serving beam dynamically inside DCI Format 1_1 or 1_2, activating new spatial filters within the same slot.
Key Functions
- Switches active spatial beam filters via fast Layer-1 DCI control channels
- Reduces beam reconfiguration latency from over 30 ms down to under 0.5 ms
- Maintains ultra-reliable connectivity for high-speed mobile nodes and drones
- Enables dynamic multi-beam tracking in complex reflective indoor environments
