5G LAN-Type Service Phase 2

Industrial Ethernet and Time-Sensitive Networking Integration

Enables 5G networks to emulate native IEEE 802.1 Ethernet local area networks, seamlessly interconnecting industrial machinery without IP routers.

Technical Explanation

Industrial factory equipment communicates using raw Ethernet MAC frames rather than IP packets. Release 18 enhances 5G LAN-type services, allowing multiple distributed devices to communicate as if plugged into the identical physical Ethernet switch. The 5G system natively handles broadcast/multicast MAC traffic, VLAN tagging, and deterministic Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN).

Key Functions

  • Emulates native IEEE 802.1 Ethernet local area networks across wide-area wireless links
  • Transports raw Layer-2 Ethernet MAC frames without requiring IP routing encapsulation
  • Integrates IEEE 802.1Q VLAN tagging and Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) timing
  • Allows industrial factories to replace physical Ethernet cables with 5G wireless links
Specifications
3GPP TS 23.501, TS 23.502 (Rel-18)
