Open Fronthaul (7-2x)
O-RAN Open Fronthaul 7-2x Split
Standardized open interface connecting O-DU to O-RU dividing physical layer processing at 7-2x functional split.
Technical Explanation
The O-RAN Open Fronthaul standardizes the Lower Layer Split (Option 7-2x). The O-DU performs resource mapping, scrambling, modulation, and precoding; the O-RU executes digital beamforming, IFFT/FFT, and RF transmission. Signaling runs over Ethernet/eCPRI, allowing mix-and-match of DUs and RUs from different vendors.
Key Functions
- Standardized open interface between O-DU baseband and O-RU radio heads
- Implements 7-2x functional split transporting frequency-domain IQ data
- Runs over standard IEEE 802.1Q Ethernet utilizing eCPRI encapsulation
