NEA0
Null 5G Encryption Algorithm
Pass-through ciphering mode where no over-the-air encryption is applied to data packets.
Technical Explanation
NEA0 is the null encryption algorithm (plaintext transmission). While prohibited for sensitive NAS signaling, NEA0 is permitted for unencrypted user plane data or emergency calls (e.g. unregistered emergency 911 calls where security keys do not exist).
Key Functions
- Transmits data in plaintext without cryptographic encryption
- Used for unauthenticated emergency 911 calls
- Permitted for testing or in regulated environments where encryption is prohibited
Specifications
3GPP TS 33.501
Interfaces
UuN1
