K_UPenc
User Plane Encryption Key
Symmetric encryption key derived from K_gNB protecting user IP and Ethernet packets over the Uu radio interface.
Technical Explanation
Derived from K_gNB, K_UPenc encrypts user plane data inside the PDCP layer of Data Radio Bearers (DRBs). It protects user Internet traffic, voice payloads, and application data from radio eavesdropping between the smartphone and the base station antenna.
Key Functions
- Encrypts user plane data packets in the PDCP layer of DRBs
- Protects user Internet traffic and voice calls from radio intercept
- Configurable per PDU session based on operator security policy
