False Base Station Detection

Rogue gNodeB Detection Mechanisms

RAN and Core algorithms detecting unauthorized rogue cell towers transmitting malicious system information.

Technical Explanation

5G introduces mechanisms to detect False Base Stations: mandatory mutual authentication via 5G-AKA, integrity protection of unicast RRC signaling, and network-assisted verification of neighbor cell reports. Rogue base stations that cannot produce valid authentication tokens (AUTN) are rejected by UEs.

Key Functions

  • Detects and ignores rogue cell towers attempting man-in-the-middle attacks
  • Enforces cryptographic network authentication via AUTN in 5G-AKA
  • Validates measurement reports to uncover anomalous unlicensed RF transmitters
